Some friends of ours taught us a scandinavian lawn game called Kubbs. SUCH a fun game to play and to watch…strategy and luck and flying wooden objects…what more could you want at a BBQ or afternoon at the park?? We decided we needed a set. And we decided that our fathers needed sets for their father’s day gifts. So we went online and nearly pooed in our pants at the cost of even a simple simple set. Enter bucket list goal #28: Build something really nice out of wood.
We bought the supplies, googled the dimensions, and crashed my father-in-law’s garage for free use of all his woodworking tools. Father-in-law then spent the afternoon with us working on the three sets, even though we told him it was probably taboo to help build his own gift. However, we had such a great time with him and he had such better finishing ideas that we did…probably not surprising since he happens to OWN and have EXTENSIVELY USED all the tools we were using.
TW’s grandparents stopped by to visit and we quickly put grandpa to work. We were kinder to grandma and TW’s mother. They spent the time watching us accumulate sawdust and shavings all over ourselves and the garage floor.

Each set consists of 21 wooden pieces. It took about 7 hours to measure, cut, plane, sand, and finish the 63 pieces of the 3 sets we were making. I did some painting on the king pin piece as a final touch.

Then we spent another 3 tortuous hours shopping for suitibly sized bags to store each set in. After making the mistake of buying one type of bag and discovering at home that it was too small, we dragged one of the completed sets with us into the other stores and tried to stuff the wooden pieces in the bags BEFORE we bought them. While slightly embarrassing, it was extremely effective and saved us numerous returns.
I spent a few hours putting together a game play instruction sheet, and we were done!
