Square Foot Garden Glory–bucket list #42 24 August 2010

Filed under: Bucket List, LivinLife — WarriorWife @ 2:54 pm

Yesterday I picked some carrots and tomatoes and squash from my garden.  Even though I’ve grown up gardening my whole life, having my own garden has been such a surprising experience.  Harvesting the produce is so fulfilling—something that never hit me as a teenager working in my dad’s garden.  My little heart was so happy carrying my handfuls of veggies into the house last night.  It totally cancels out all the troubles and the “failures” this first garden has struggled through.  I’m already looking forward to next year’s garden.  I see how this hobby can become addicting.

My father-in-law and brother-in-law helped The Warrior build the garden, and then it was all up to me.  Check it off the bucket list, hooray!  This is definitely one to repeat over and over and over again. :)

#28 Build something really nice out of wood 6 July 2009

Filed under: Bucket List — WarriorWife @ 6:44 am

Some friends of ours taught us a scandinavian lawn game called Kubbs.  SUCH a fun game to play and to watch…strategy and luck and flying wooden objects…what more could you want at a BBQ or afternoon at the park??  We decided we needed a set.  And we decided that our fathers needed sets for their father’s day gifts.  So we went online and nearly pooed in our pants at the cost of even a simple simple set.  Enter bucket list goal #28: Build something really nice out of wood.

We bought the supplies, googled the dimensions, and crashed my father-in-law’s garage for free use of all his woodworking tools.  Father-in-law then spent the afternoon with us working on the three sets, even though we told him it was probably taboo to help build his own gift.  However, we had such a great time with him and he had such better finishing ideas that we did…probably not surprising since he happens to OWN and have EXTENSIVELY USED all the tools we were using.

TW’s grandparents stopped by to visit and we quickly put grandpa to work.  We were kinder to grandma and TW’s mother.  They spent the time watching us accumulate sawdust and shavings all over ourselves and the garage floor.

Each set consists of 21 wooden pieces.  It took about 7 hours to measure, cut, plane, sand, and finish the 63 pieces of the 3 sets we were making.  I did some painting on the king pin piece as a final touch.

Then we spent another 3 tortuous hours shopping for suitibly sized bags to store each set in.  After making the mistake of buying one type of bag and discovering at home that it was too small, we dragged one of the completed sets with us into the other stores and tried to stuff the wooden pieces in the bags BEFORE we bought them.  While slightly embarrassing, it was extremely effective and saved us numerous returns.

I spent a few hours putting together a game play instruction sheet, and we were done!

It’s a surprise 12 April 2009

Filed under: Bucket List, LivinLife — TheWarrior @ 9:33 pm

Over the past week WarriorWife has been considering whether she wants the doctor to tell her the baby’s gender.  Originally she just figured she would, because that is just the way it is normally done.  I’m not 100% sure of her reason, but for our first child we are going to leave one last “good” surprise, the baby’s gender.

I personally think that her decision was partly motivated by her love for people’s reactions.  I’m sure that is not the main reason, but I am sure it was a contributing factor.  Perhaps WarriorWife will tell us her reasoning in a later post.  For now here is a list of why I am on her side:

1. She’s got to carry the burden for the next 6 months, so I think it is should be her choice.
2. I always love a good surprise, and it seems there are so few of them left in the world today.  So why not take advantage of them when they come.  It’s like Christmas… although you want to know what you are getting it is always best to wait and find out.
3. We don’t want 1,000 outfits for newborns, so hopefully people will give more versatile gifts.  Although I don’t blame people, baby clothes are way cuter than “normal people clothes”
4. It’s fun to be adventurous, right?!
5. And lastly, my personal favorite (not really). We read that not knowing the gender gives the mother extra motivation to push a little harder during labor.  We enjoyed a good laugh after reading that, so I wanted to share.

    So what do you think:

Boy or Girl? (vote at the right)

At your 1st baby's ultrasound you would?

#58 – Spend a day at the movies and see at least 3 shows 27 August 2008

Filed under: Bucket List — WarriorWife @ 9:02 am

For my birthday this year, on our Friday off of work, we crossed this one off of the bucket list. People thought I was crazy, but TW and I planned it all out carefully and I was excited for the day “sans reality”–what more could you ask for on your birthday?

We stocked up on smuggling-junk food and headed over to the theater.  It wasn’t even open yet.  Our movie started in 5 minutes and they were just showing up to start the popcorn machines.  Antsy?  Yes. Yes I was.  But I passed the time talking with the 3 ten year olds in line who were sure they were missing their movie because it started five minutes ago and WHY wasn’t the ticket office open yet?

On the good side the whole day the theater was pretty empty, but let’s tell the truth–it was the dollar theater.  (Did the 10 year olds at the beginning tip you off to that?)  Not that we were too cheap for all the shows at matinee prices.  Instead we sacrificed stadium reclining seating to see 4 movies we actually WANTED to see.  As uncool as such a trip would probably make us, we stuck to our guns and our shoes stuck to the floor.

We saw 4 movies.  Yep.  Do the double take…FOUR.  And those were…

Iron Man         Horton Hears a Who         The Hulk         Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian

The only disappointment of the day were the disgusting super cool teenagers who apparently decided spit all over our car windows during our last show.

    1 day

    4 movies

    10 hours

    Total cost: $19

Recommend the movies.  Recommend the experience.  Recommend the nicer theater without the expectorating teenagers.
